Background
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) represents the largest free trade area globally, encompassing 55 African Union (AU) member countries and eight Regional Economic Communities (RECs). With a population of approximately 1.3 billion people and a combined GDP of around US$3.4 trillion, AfCFTA aims to facilitate the free movement of goods and services across Africa, thereby enhancing the continent's trading position in the global market. This initiative is a key project under the AU's Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, which envisions transforming Africa into a global powerhouse.
Internship Program Overview
The AfCFTA is offering an internship program to provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience and international exposure. The program is designed to introduce qualified and motivated students to the AfCFTA's work and to enhance their analytical and technical skills in an international setting.
Departments for Internship Placement
Interns will assist in providing administrative and technical support across various departments, including:
- Office of the Secretary-General
- Protocol Division
- Communications Division
- Conferences and Languages Division
- Directorate of Trade in Goods and Competition
- Directorate of Customs
- Directorate of Trade in Services, Investment, IPR, and Digital Trade
- Directorate of Dispute Settlement and Legal Affairs
- Directorate of Administration of Human Resources Management/IT Unit
- Directorate of Finance
- Directorate of Institutional Matters & Programme Coordination
Objectives
1. Provide students with exposure to the AfCFTA's work.
2. Offer a learning platform for qualified students to serve as interns.
3. Allow students to experience the operations of a major AU project firsthand.
4. Promote the AfCFTA and encourage youth involvement in international organizations.
Eligibility Requirements
1. Must be nationals of an AU member state and reside in Ghana.
2. Final-year students enrolled full-time in accredited degree programs in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Audit, or related fields.
3. Available for a minimum of three months.
4. Proficiency in one of the AU's official languages (French, English, Portuguese, Arabic, Kiswahili, Spanish); fluency in additional AU languages is an advantage.
5. High level of quantitative and IT skills (tests will be administered).
6. Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
7. Ability to work in a multicultural and international team environment.
8. Commitment to upholding the Institution's rules and values.

Selection Process

Terms and conditions
- The AfCFTA Secretariat will not provide financial support for travel or accommodation.
- Interns will not receive compensation for travel.
- The internship duration is three months, renewable once based on business needs.
