Nigerian Workers Begin Receiving New Minimum Wage Payments

Nigerian workers are now receiving the newly approved minimum wage of N70,000, a significant increase from the previous N30,000, as confirmed by key officials from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Benson Upah, spokesperson for the NLC, and Tommy Etim, TUC Deputy President, highlighted that the increase follows the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission's approval, in accordance with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act of 2024. This adjustment represents a 100% pay rise for many workers.

Over 1.2 million federal workers have begun receiving the new wage, with reports of some also getting an additional N40,000 as a consequential adjustment. A civil servant from the Head of Civil Service’s office confirmed receipt of the new minimum wage for September 2024.

Labour leaders are calling on other organizations to adopt the federal government’s initiative. Upah emphasized the need for others to follow suit, while Etim stated that the government's committee on consequential adjustments has provided a clear template, leaving no excuse for delays in payment.

This wage increase aims to enhance the livelihoods of workers across Nigeria, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve economic conditions.
