BREAKING: Exciting news!
The Federal Government has announced that the new minimum wage will take effect from May 1, 2024. Although the negotiations are still ongoing, workers will not lose anything as the government is committed to implementing the new wage. The Minister of State Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, addressed Nigerian workers at the May Day celebration in Abuja and assured them that a wide consultation is taking place to finalize the document as soon as possible.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have been advocating for an upward review of wage awards. They have emphasized the need for the new minimum wage to help workers cope with the economic realities and high cost of living in Nigeria. In fact, they have proposed N615,000 as the new minimum wage.
It's unfortunate that not all governors are currently paying the current wage award, which expired in April. However, the Minimum Wage Act of 2019, signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, mandates a review every five years to meet the changing economic demands of workers.
President Bola Tinubu has praised the contributions of Nigerian workers, recognizing their hard work and dedication. With the new minimum wage, it is hoped that workers will have improved financial stability and a better quality of life.
Let's celebrate this positive step towards supporting workers and ensuring their well-being! 🎉💼 #MinimumWage #WorkersRights #NigeriaLabor #BetterFuture
